Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important political figure stated the attack made him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
