Our Premier Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, Lux may look more like a challenging scholarly challenge rather than a new pop album from a musician whose previous hit featured a global pop icon. Divided across 4 distinct sections and sung in 13 languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often via the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness elsewhere—is shot upwards on this record, carried by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a vast roll call of contributors. The pure daring alone renders the work of other artists appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the ambitions are far higher on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you still want to be right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly on the stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, everything falls away, and there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top string surge crashes down like cartoonish force. The song then shifts into the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in you rarely exactly understand—nor want to know—where you is going to next."

Nearly every song ends at a totally different point than where it started. A track explores the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement on Lux is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its built-in excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish feast where the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
