Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the option to question specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
